Bellone Lifts Voluntary Evacuation Of Fire Island As Hermine Moves Off To The East

Hauppauge – After receiving an updated weather forecast from the National Weather Service, Suffolk County has lifted the voluntary evacuation on Fire Island. While the National Hurricane Center still has a tropical storm warning in effect for the coast from Fire Island Inlet to Port Jefferson Harbor, the storm surge warning has been lifted. Suffolk County has dodged the worst predicted impacts of the storm.

Emergency management personnel will continue to monitor the storm due to possible chance of minor flooding for immediate shoreline communities and low-lying areas during Monday’s high tide.  There is limited potential for minor to locally moderate damage to marinas, docks, boardwalks and piers.

Portions of the coastline could still experience of 1-2 feet of storm surge.  However, winds will not be a significant factor as winds are expected to be at 15-25 mph.

The Suffolk County Emergency Operations Center reopened this morning at 5 a.m. at a low level of staffing, and additional agencies reported to the EOC at 8 a.m.  Suffolk County FRES has reported that the overnight call volume to our 911 emergency dispatch was very low this past evening.

An evaluation is underway by Suffolk County FRES as to the need for maintaining EOC operations beyond noon today, and a determination will be made accordingly.
