Black Bears Spoil Seawolves’ Senior Day On Saturday At LaValle Stadium

Stony Brook – Despite two touchdowns and 94 rushing yards by RB Donald Liotine, the Stony Brook football team was unable to overcome a strong first half by Maine in a 27-21 loss on Saturday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in a CAA Football Conference game.

The Seawolves (5-5, 4-3 CAA Football) trailed 20-0 at halftime and 27-0 midway through the third quarter, but chipped away with the two Liotine touchdowns and a pick-six by DB Travon Reid-Segure, but the Black Bears (6-4, 5-2 CAA Football) was able to hold on for the sixth win in their last seven games.dsc_3692

Scoring

–       Maine got on the board first with a 12-yard touchdown run by RB Josh Mack with 6:49 left in the first quarter. The run capped an 11-play, 56-yard drive. The PAT was good by Brandon Briggs.

–       The Black Bears added to the lead on a fumble recovered and returned 23 yard by DB Mozai Nelson in the second quarter. The PAT by Brandon Briggs was no good.

–       Maine tacked on another touchdown just before halftime with a two-yard pass from QB Dan Collins to WR Osumah. The play capped a 12-play, 72-yard drive. Brandon Briggs’ PAT was good.

–       The Black Bears added to their lead with a 21-yard pass from QB Dan Collins to RB Josh Mack with 8:20 left in the third quarter. The play capped a nine-play, 63-yard drive. The PAT by Brandon Briggs was good.

–       Stony Brook cracked the scoreboard with a one-yard run by RB Donald Liotine with 4:19 left in the third quarter. The score capped an eight-play, 74-yard drive. The PAT by Przemyslaw Popek was good.

–       DB Travon Reid-Segure added to the Seawolves total with a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown on Maine’s second play after Liotine’s touchdown. Przemyslaw Popek’s PAT was good.

–       RB Donald Liotine broke a 50-yard run for the touchdown with 11:09 remaining in the fourth quarter that completed a four-play, 85-yard drive. Przemyslaw Popek’s PAT was good to cut the deficit to just six.

The Numbers

–       Stony Brook had 222 yards on 48 plays, while Maine recorded 315 yards on 73 plays.

–       The Seawolves had 155 yards rushing on 35 carries, while the Black Bears netted 159 yards on the ground on 49 carries.

–       RB Donald Liotine led Stony Brook with 94 yards on eight carries, including a pair of touchdowns.

–       QB Pat Irwin, in his first career start, was five-of-13 for 67 yards.

–       The defense was led by DB Tyrice Beverette’s career-high 15 tackles, while LB Shayne Lawless and LB Noah McGinty each recorded a career-tying 11 stops.

Notes

–       QB Pat Irwin started for the first time in his career.

–       Irwin’s first career completion was a 17-yarder to FB Anthony Anderson on the second drive of the game.

–       RB Donald Liotine scored his first rushing touchdown of the season and the sixth of his career with the one-yard run in the third quarter.

–       Liotine added to his touchdown total with a season-long 50-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter.

–       DB Travon Reid-Segure returned an interception 12 yards for his first career touchdown. The interception was the third of his career.

–       DB Tyrice Beverette recorded a career-high 15 tackles. His previous high was 14 collected at James Madison last season.

–       Captains for today’s game were WR Tim Keith, RB Stacey Bedell, DB Tyrice Beverette, DB Jaheem Woods and DL Aaron Thompson.

–       Today’s honorary captain was Dan Flores ‘99, a TE on Stony Brook’s first Division I team.

 Up Next

Stony Brook will complete the regular season next Saturday at Albany in the annual Empire Clash. The Seawolves and Great Danes will kickoff at 1 p.m. at Bob Ford Field.
